A 1911 has two safeties that work together: a manual thumb safety on the side of the frame that blocks the sear, and a passive grip safety on the back of the grip that blocks the trigger until you take a firing grip. This guide explains how the thumb safety, grip safety, and ambidextrous safety work, the difference between a beavertail and a GI grip safety, and how a thumb safety gets fit.
