Shotgun Parts
A shotgun is a type of firearm that is usually designed to be fired from the shoulder. It typically has a smooth bore barrel, which means that the inside of the barrel is not rifled. This makes it easier to accurately fire rounds of shot, which are essentially small lead or steel pellets.
The typical shotgun has a length of between 47 and 77 cm (18.5 and 30 inches), and the barrel's diameter will depend upon the gauge of the shotgun. The ammunition that is most commonly used in a shotgun is birdshot, which is a type of lead shot.
You can purchase a shotgun or shotgun parts & accessories online from Fusion Firearms or from your local dealer. You also have the option of purchasing “online” your gun quickly at a great price, with direct shipping to your FFL Dealer of your choice, for pick-up.
What are Shotgun Parts?
The shotgun is composed of several key parts, including the stock, chamber, Barrel, Breech, and action. The stock is the part of the shotgun that is held against the shoulder, and it contains the pistol grip and/or buttstock. The chamber is the part of the shotgun that holds the shells, and the barrels are the long tubes through which the shot leaves the gun.
The action is the part of the shotgun that contains the receiver, hammer, firing pin, and the action parts and trigger group. This is the mechanism that loads, unloads, and cocks the gun.
A large range of shotgun parts for replacement, maintenance, or upgrades are available through Fusion Firearms. Examples of popular maintenance parts are extractors, firing pins, retaining pins, recoil springs, gas pistons & gas piston “O-Ring”, and charging handles to name a few.
As for shotgun accessory items; these are parts to upgrade your shotgun for a specific application such as trap, skeet, 5-stand, 3-gun matches, specific game hunting, and tactical defensive courses. Many popular Fusion Firearms accessories items are extra barrel assemblies, butt stock & forestock configurations, butt pads & recoil pads, adjustable rifle style sights, fiber-optic bead sights, brass bead sights, choke tube sets, extended choke tubes, cleaning kits, and much more. Fusion firearms shotgun accessories are manufactured so that you can upgrade your shotgun the way you want it for your application.
What Parts do you oil a Shotgun?
The action, chamber, and barrels are the main parts of the shotgun that you need to maintain. These parts and assemblies have a range of metal mechanical parts which require periodic lubrication. A small amount of good quality gun oil dropped into those parts and then the action worked manually to wick in the oil is recommended. A typical shotgun is fairly easy to work on because you can reach the mechanical workings without much trouble from the bolt area or bottom opening where the follower is. In addition, you can see more excellent maintenance information in the Fusion Firearms blog on the website.
The trigger assembly is one of the more complicated parts of a shotgun to work on. The trigger assembly or trigger group is usually located inside the trigger guard and/or action. This trigger group contains the trigger, trigger springs, sear and generally the hammer.
The basic idea is that any of the mechanical working parts and assemblies in a shotgun should be cleaned and have a light coating of gun oil applied after each use. It is also a good idea to use a silicone cloth or oiled rag and lightly oil the exterior of all metal parts such as the action & barrel assembly. This is a good practice and will also aid in reducing the corrosion of these parts.
Also, remember to always have your shotgun unloaded when not in use and during any cleaning or maintenance. This includes making sure that the barrel chamber has No shells in it, the action has No shells in it, and the magazine tube is completely unloaded and clear of any shells/live ammunition.
How Easy are Parts to oil?
Most shotgun parts are fairly easy to oil. Remember, these are mechanical components that don't require the precision that many gunsmithing jobs do. Most barrel removal and basic field stripping procedures are provided in your manual or see the instructional videos on Fusionfirearms.com.
Most other parts removal can be worked on with basic hand tools. As always, if you are not comfortable with the removal of any parts please consult a competent gunsmith.
In addition to basic lubricating, it is recommended to have a cleaning kit for the proper gauge of a shotgun, to properly clean and maintain your shotgun.
What are the Types of Shotgun Parts?
There are several types of shotgun parts, including:
The Action
The action is the mechanism that loads, unloads, and cocks the gun. In both the double- and single-barrel shotguns, break-actions also exist, which means they pivot. This allows them to open at the breech, which causes exposure to the firing chambers. This allows them to load manually when a shell drops in the chamber. Common break-actions are single shot, double barrel, and over/under shotguns.
Push Button/Side Latch Release
This part is used on most pump & semi-auto shotguns. This button or release allows the operator to push this button to release the bolt and allow the pump forearm mechanism to return to the rear of its operating stroke and open the action. On semi-auto shotguns, this button will generally release the bolt into battery with the chamber/barrel. Depending on your shotgun make or model the operation may vary. Consult your instruction manual for detailed instructions or seek professional help.
Trigger Guard, Trigger, and Safety
The trigger guard is part of the action or trigger mechanism. It is a protective housing and is designed to protect the trigger from being engaged accidentally. The trigger is the mechanical component of a shotgun that is actuated to fire the shotgun. The trigger also generally works in conjunction with safety. This safety is engaged to block the trigger from working, or “dis-engaged” to allow the shotgun to fire. Safeties differ from make and model and you should always totally understand the workings of the safety. Always refer to your instruction manual or consult the manufacturer or a professional for a complete, clear, and total understanding of the safety mechanisms of your shotgun before any use. Remember, ultimately you are responsible for the safety of yourself and all those around you. Proper knowledge of the shotgun's operation, safety mechanisms, and complete safety procedures must be totally understood before any use or operation of any shotgun or gun.
The Barrel
A shotgun barrel is a long tube inside the gun through which the shot projectiles travel. A shotgun barrel is made of either a single piece of metal or multiple pieces joined together to form one solid unit. Barrel styles, lengths, and types will vary depending on your application and needs. Fusion Firearms offers many barrel assembly options for a wide range of applications and uses. Many examples are barrels with threaded choke tubes, vent rib barrels, rifled sight barrels, and many more. See Fusion Firearms for a wide range of replacement barrels for your application.
The Hammer
The hammer is usually held inside the action. When you want to fire your shotgun, you pull the trigger, which releases this hammer. As it travels from its resting position to its striking position, it releases or contacts the firing pin, which strikes the primer of your shell. This causes the primer to ignite and burn the gunpowder, causing pressure to force the wad & shot down and out the barrel.
Extractors and Ejectors
The extractors and ejectors are the parts of the shotgun that remove the fired shells from the barrel/chamber of the gun. After a shell is fired the extractor is used to grab the rim of the shotshell casing and extract it from the chamber. As the extractor pulls the shell from the chamber it will move the shell to a point where it makes contact with the ejector. At this point, the ejector will hit the rim of the shotshell causing it to “eject” from the shotgun.
