1911 Hammers
1911 Hammers
If you own or are planning to own a firearm, it's important to know all the parts. One of those parts is a hammer. Notably, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and ask what is a gun hammer. The article below explains what it is are why it's essential, according to Fusion Firearms.
What Are Hammers (Firearms)?
If you know how guns work, you're aware of how vital a hammer is. It's the part of a gun that strikes the percussion primer/cap or the firing pin, igniting the propellant and firing the projectile. It's similar to a normal hammer nail gun in both function and form hence the name. The sear holds the hammer in place.
Most hammers are usually pivoted in a firearm. A linear hammer is slightly different, although it works almost the same as a striker.
Like other parts, your hammer gun will wear out and need replacing. When that happens, you can contact Fusion Firearms for your replacement needs. Browse our huge selection of hammers and choose what you need.
What Are the Advantages of a Hammer-Fired Pistol?
One of the advantages of a hammer-fired pistol is that it's accurate and precise, making your work easier, just like an electric hammer gun. In addition, the external safeties can be used to lock it in place, safely decock the hammer or lock the percussion cap or firing pin, preventing it from being released.
Most people prefer hammer-fired pistols as manipulating the slide is easier, and they also have better triggers. Single-action hammer-fired guns are easier to shoot because of a low trigger pull weight, hence less movement, making it easy to aim.
Lastly, hammer-fired pistols have more space, a bigger and stronger mainspring, and a thicker hammer. This is unlike striker-fired pistols, which usually have less mass.
What's the Difference Between Striker and Hammer-Fired Pistols?
The main difference between a hammer and a striker-fired pistol is in the design. Hammer-fired pistols have a hammer that drives the firing pin. The hammer can either be internal or external. If it's internal, it's part of the frame, and the firing pin is inside the slide. If it's external, you can see it and operate it manually.
On the other hand, a striker-fired pistol comes with a simpler design, just like a hammer massage gun. However, they don't have a hammer. Instead, the mainspring acts as the firing pin directly. The firing pin is called the striker; instead of being hit by the hammer, it does the hitting.
